It presently functions as a center for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) within the Linguistics Department at UT Arlington. Presently, the ELI administers three programs: Intensive English, which is a non-credit 20 hour per week program for international students wanting to improve their English for academic purposes, Developmental English, a program for international teaching assistants who are required to improve their oral presentation skills in English, and the Graduate English Skills Program (GESP) for enrolled international graduate students at UTA whose department has requested improvement in their English skills so that the students can better pursue graduate studies. The mission of the ELI is to provide a program setting for international students that helps students improve English language skills needed to pursue an academic career in a U.S. university. The ELI also has as its mission to assist students in their cultural adjustment so that pursuit of an academic career will be both enjoyable and productive. The ELI has membership in TESOL, NAFSA, CALICO, (AAIEP) American Association of Intensive English Programs and (UCIEP) University and College Intensive English Programs; it adheres to the practices and standards set by these organizations. CLASS CONTENT: Grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening comprehension are emphasized in intensive English. Since the vast majority of the program's students are interested in university study, intensive English focuses on honing those skills necessary for an academic career. Students in mid-level and higher classes are taught computer skills. Although the program is not intended to be an SAT or TOEFL preparation course, the programs uses parts from these examinations as extra teaching materials.
